Why To Start A Blog In South Africa

We live in an increasingly online world and there are compelling reasons to start a blog in South Africa. The arts are increasing in value with the popularity and increasing demand for content. Blogging is no different and here are some reasons why you should start a blog in South Africa

You Have A Lot To Say

If you have a lot on your mind that and you are interested in putting it out into the world, then blogging is one of the best ways to do it. There are  people with different tastes throughout the world, and blogging allows you to connect with people who have the same tastes or share the same ideas as you. Because of the vast scope of blogging, you are guaranteed to find people who are interested in what you have to say, if you pursue blogging seriously. A simple demonstration is this: Google anything you are interested in, no matter how unusual. You will find something for it and that person is probably making money from whatever content you find. This means that there is a market for whatever you are interested in and have to say.

You Can Make Money From Blogging

Blogging can be very profitable if you know how to do it properly. There are various ways to get paid for blogging. You can either work in collaboration with companies who pay you as a guest blogger or to write promotional articles from them on your blog. Alternately, you can run your blog as a business and monetize it. There are various ways of monetizing a blog, such as online advertising, or affiliate marketing where you get paid just to promote products that people are already interested in.

Bloggers Are Influencers

Bloggers are now becoming influencers. In South Africa we only tend to know influencers as people who have large followings on Twitter or Instagram but that’s just a small part of it. An influencer is ANYONE who has an audience that they have influence over. One can also argue that influencers who are bloggers have more power of influence because an audience who reads articles are likely more dedicated because of the time and concentration commitment that reading requires. This means that the blogger’s audience is more engaged and when it comes to influence, engagement is actually the factor that is given more consideration by businesses, even more so than followership.

The landscape of media is changing very fast. Influencers are essentially what celebrities are evolving into. If you are blogging you can become an influencer once you have built up your following. And once you do that, you will have more people knowing you and you will be start being invited to do influencer gigs. There are bloggers in South Africa that are getting paid sums of more than R10,000 for one promotion article.

Blogging Is Easy

The act of blogging is very easy. All you have to do is put your thoughts down on paper or on to a word editor. Compare this for example to other things like YouTube where you have to have other skills like being able to speak well or even having a bubbly personality. Blogging allows you to do that whole process in comfort so even if you are camera shy or don’t have a photographer to take pretty photos of you, you can take your time to create your perfect article Blogging is also very easy to edit, compared to other forms of content creation.

Blogging Will Explode In South Africa

Blogging is still very new in South Africa. that Means that locally, there isn’t much competition and it is much easier to establish yourself as an authoritative blog than it is in other places of the world. There is also a big appetite for South African companies to link up with local influencers but not enough content. All of this means that content creation forms like blogging are going to go through a lot of growth in SA. Therefore, it would be very beneficial to get in and establish yourself in the early days, so that you can reap the rewards when things really take off.

  1. Hi, thank you for this articles it’s so relevant to me, I’ve read almost everything on it… great stuff!
I have a question on blogging, so I wanna start my own blog but I’m not sure whether it’s limited to just one niche or can I also blog about various niches in my blog.
for example, if my interests are music, real estate, weigh-loss etc, these don’t even mix in real life but i have interests in all of them, Is it advisable to incorporate all of them in one blog?

    • Hi Sphiwe, since you are starting from scratch, it would be best to focus on one niche. A big part of your website growth is visitors who return to your website (subscribers/followers).

Think about the websites or YouTube channels that you visit regularly. If you want to read about real-estate, you will go to the real estate website or channel because that is where they have earned your trust. If that site started publishing information about weight-loss, that would probably confuse you and might turn you away because that might not be what you want from that website. While it’s possible to do a “general” blog, it will probably take much longer for your website to gain authority in different niches, than if you focus on one niche.

So the best is to stick to one niche and to grow that blog. Once you succeed with that one, you can start a blog in a different niche.

Does that answer your question adequately?

          • I meant thanks very much for opening my eyes. I have been searching and trying to crack my brain on how I can use my writing skills to earn money on the South African platform. I noted that some of the American Affiliate marketing platforms are designed only targeted towards certain countries and not for some countries in the African continent, and am therefore happy that we do have an Affiliate in quiet a number of our South African businesses. Big up to you for educating the nation!!!!

          • Thanks for the kind words Linda. If you are starting affiliate marketing from scratch then you can make your blog international. The main reason is that the audience is much bigger if you are focusing internationally (particularly the USA). Just because you are not the US doesn’t mean you can’t market to them. The internet is a global marketplace and you can you can blog to a global audience and get paid in dollars!

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the platform I use to blog for an international audience. That is where I learned how to blog and make money from it. To try it out is free so check out the 10 free lessons and then if you like what you see, you can go premium.

  2. Hey, thank you very much for such great insight. I’m thinking of starting a dental blog. Ihave not come across many since I’ve started looking. Do you think it would be a great idea for a private dental practice to have a blog?

    • Yes it’s a good idea for a private dental practice to have a blog. To be more specific, the best way would be to have a proper business website, and then a blog section on that website.

If you can properly create useful content that successfully ranks in search engines, you can get a steady stream of clients that way. That is how businesses get clients today. Think about it, these days, every question someone thinks to ask, they go to google for. So if I search for “Dentist prices” and find your blog, which is on your business website, I am going to go to your practice since if it’s close to me. You must just structure the blog so that at the end of each article, you add the “At Fortunate Dental Practice, we offer services XYZ”
